Question Time: Likes and Dislikes

I knew when I decided to start this blog that I not only wanted to share the process with all of you but that I also wanted to get your input.  The first question is actually a two part one.

Question 1a:  What is the thing(s) that you like best about your home?  This can be anything - layout, appliance, color, flooring, etc.  It is fine to see things in photos in magazines.  Hearing what actual people like because they have it in their homes is better.

Question 1b:  What thing(s) do you dislike about your home?  I know that no home will be perfect.  We all have something we wish that was different though.

This will be my only new home post this week.  I really hope you will take the time to your answers.  We have not yet started construction so this is the perfect time for me to get honest input.

  1. Our kitchen has double windows on two walls, which forms an Lshape area. We used it as dining space for years but now it is used as a sitting area. The windows face north and east and flood that room with light on all but the very darkest days. It's my most favorite feature of my home. We saw the same floor plan in another mobile home when we were looking and then in another still. I knew it was the 'right' one for us because all three times we were blown away by those windows.

What I dislike most is our second bath is too small...well the doorway is too small. The intake for the heat pump fills one corner of the bath and it made that doorway perhap 2 1/2 feet wide, which sounds big enough but it creates a bottle neck sort of entry to that bath. We avoided using it for years after the kids moved out because the impression was that the room was too small. In fact it's quite comfortable but the placement of that door ruins it for space. so look really had at your spaces and where you plan to put doors etc. Had that bath door opened off the living room or the furnace been moved to a bumpout and created a sort of entryway area, it would have made a world of difference in the house overall.

We also paid extra for storm windows so there is a double window space, not double paned with argon gas but an inside window a space of about three inches and a storm window. It's made a huge difference in the warmth and coolness of the house.

    1. I think the biggest reason we have not started building sooner is that we wanted the layout to be as good as possible.

Thank you also for the input about the windows. I am trying to make a list of quality items that need to be installed at the time of building. I know there are some things we can upgrade later, but good windows are a must have from the start.

  2. We, too, live in a manufactured home, so we have a peaked ceiling. I love that, because it makes our 1550 sf house feel larger.
I very much dislike my small galley kitchen, and that the laundry/furnace area has no wall/door to quiet the noise.

    1. You make a good point of ensuring that the laundry room is well insulated against sound. It is little things like this that we may not always think of beforehand.

  3. My water heater is in my bedroom closet. It makes noise. I often hear it gurgling and such during the night. Not a huge noise, but disturbing. The bathroom door was much too narrow, but the whole room is too narrow. The only way to make it wider would be to remove the small vanity. I think you already know -- no carpet in bathrooms and kitchens plus laundry area!

  4. I love my giant entry way closet and 1 level home. It is cheaper to heat & cool than multi level. I too think about stairs at some point. Our biggest wish would be some time of mud room, including a rest room at the entry to the garage. This would be so convient when working out in the yard or my husband working in his little workshop.
